Thailand Accelerates Investment Upgrade to Tackle Global Volatility and Drive Sustainable Growth

Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, shared his vision at the IMF Governor Talks during the 2026 Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. He highlighted that Thailand’s economy still faces structural constraints, particularly low levels of investment, resulting in continued reliance on external demand.

The government is therefore advancing an “investment upgrade” strategy, focusing on infrastructure development, digital technology and AI, human capital development, and regulatory reform. Key initiatives include the Skill Bridge Program and Smart Agriculture to enhance productivity and increase incomes.

To address global uncertainties, Thailand is adopting the “4T” policy framework: Target, Transition, Transformation, and Together. This is complemented by efforts to develop smart grids and promote Direct Power Purchase Agreements (Direct PPA), enabling greater access to clean energy and encouraging public participation.

On fiscal policy, the government remains committed to discipline, shifting from broad-based stimulus to targeted support, while accelerating investment in the green and digital economy to strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Finally, Thailand emphasized ASEAN’s role as a “stabilizing force” in a fragmented global economy. As host of the IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings in October 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand will advance the theme “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience,” aiming to foster international economic cooperation and sustainable growth amid global challenges.
