Thailand Navigates Global Economic Volatility: Turning Crisis into Opportunity for New Horizons

During the Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, joined the global economic panel “The Debate on the Global Economy” alongside leading policymakers, including Dr. Kristalina Georgieva (Managing Director of the IMF), Mohammed Al-Jadaan (Saudi Arabia’s Finance Minister), François Villeroy (Governor of the Bank of France), Dr. Eswar Prasad (Senior Professor of Trade Policy and Economics at Cornell University), and Martina Cheung (President and CEO of S&P Global).

He shared Thailand’s perspective on the global stage amid mounting challenges from conflicts in the Middle East and deep structural shifts in geopolitics, trade, and technology.

As a net energy importer, Thailand is facing significant pressure from rising energy prices, which are driving up living costs. The supply disruptions affect production in agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

If left unaddressed, these pressures could lead to slower economic growth and high inflation.

However, Thailand views this crisis not just as a risk, but as an opportunity to transform. The country is focusing on strengthening “economic security” to attract foreign investment, while accelerating regulatory reforms, reducing red tape, and enhancing overall competitiveness.

A key priority is the transition toward clean energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Initiatives, such as solar rooftop programs, are being promoted, allowing households to sell excess electricity back to the grid - thus, helping ease long-term energy costs for the households.

Within limited fiscal space, Thailand is adopting the “4T” policy framework:

Target : Delivering targeted support to vulnerable groups
Transition : Advancing the shift to sustainable energy
Transform : Reforming economic structures for a changing world
Together : Strengthening collaboration across public, private, and international sectors

Despite global uncertainty, Thailand’s economic fundamentals remain strong, particularly in terms of external stability and high international reserves. With these foundations, Thailand is ready to move forward and contribute to building the "New Horizons" of the global economy.
